What is income tax?
Income tax is the tax you pay on your profit (turnover minus business expenses and deductions). As a self-employed person, this falls under Box 1: Taxable income from work and home.
When do you have to pay income tax as a self-employed person?
You are liable to tax as soon as you make a profit. This also applies if you combine self-employment with employment or have other income, such as freelance jobs or rentals.
How to file income tax returns as a self-employed person?
Log in to the Tax Office. with your DigiD, make sure your records are in order and accurately fill in your turnover, expenses and deductions. Don't forget to take advantage of tax benefits such as the self-employed deduction.
When should you file your income tax return?
The deadline is 31 March of the year following the tax year. For 2024, it is 31 March 2025. If you miss the deadline, you risk a fine.
What should you do if you miss the deadline?
Apply for postponement in time via My Tax Office. This usually gives you until 1 September, but make sure you pay the tax due on time to avoid tax interest.
