You have a good idea, a concrete plan and great motivation to start as a self-employed person. But before you can do business, you need to register your company with the Chamber of Commerce (CoC). But how do you do that and what do you pay attention to?

Do you need to register with the Chamber of Commerce?

Do you want to start a business? Then you need to register with the Chamber of Commerce. Entrepreneurship exists if you:

  • offering a product or service as a self-employed person.
  • and make money with this.
  • Have orders or make sales more often.
  • financial risk (such as investing).

So, do you feel addressed? Then read on.

Choosing your company name

While registering with the Chamber of Commerce, you have to choose a business name. This name should be unique and should not be misleading. You should also consider the following:

  • Your unique company name should still be available.
  • The name should match what you are selling.

So check whether your desired name is still available. You can do this in the Trade register where you can see if the domain name is still free.

Choosing a legal form

When registering your company, you need to choose the right legal form. Most start-ups start with a sole proprietorship. This legal form is easy to set up and involves few administrative obligations. You pay income tax on your profits and you are the sole boss of your business.

Registering

To register, apply online and then make an appointment at a CoC office. When you go to this appointment, bring valid identification. Also make sure you are clear on what you want to earn money with. Plan your appointment via the CoC register.

What does registration at the Chamber of Commerce cost?

Registering with the Chamber of Commerce (CoC) will cost a one-off sum of €75. You pay this amount directly at the appointment, usually by pin. Cash payment is not possible.

After your registration

Once you have registered, you will receive a Chamber of Commerce number and possibly your VAT number from the Inland Revenue. We advise you to open a business account and set up good administration right away. That way, you will always have your finances in order and save a lot of hassle.
